About Austin Elementary

History & Namesake

Austin Elementary, originally known as the Community School and Meeting House, opened in February 1912. The first school was located near the crossroads of the Willis-Waukegan Road and the Conroe-Cleveland Road in Conroe, Texas, near the City of Cut and Shoot. The school joined Conroe ISD in March of 1925 and a new building was opened in 1952 at Austin's current location. The building has been renovated many times over the years to meet the needs of the changing community. The most recent major renovation was part of the 2015 bond referendum and was completed in 2019.

In 1927, Conroe ISD changed the name of the Community School to Stephen F. Austin Elementary. Stephen F. Austin, known as the "Father of Texas," took over his father's land grant from Mexico to settle the first English-speaking colonies in Texas in the 1820. He briefly served as secretary of state of the new Republic of Texas until his death in 1836 at the age of 43.
